Edward Norton plays dual roles of twin brothers Bill and Brady Kincaid. When Bill receives news of the murder of Brady in a drug deal gone bad, he leaves his post teaching Classical philosophy at Brown University to travel back to his childhood home in rural Oklahoma. Upon arrival, he finds that reports of his brother's death are "greatly exaggerated" and is quickly caught up in one of Brady's dubious schemes.

Despite severe misgivings Bill agrees to assume Brady's identity and spend time with his mother Daisy (Susan Sarandon) who is living in a retirement village and with Janet (Keri Russell), an educated woman who has bypassed academia for a gentler life.

Now, with the perfect alibi, Brady and his best friend/business partner Bolger (Tim Blake Nelson) find time to take care of some unfinished business with unscrupulous civic leader Pug Rothbaum (Richard Dreyfuss).

In the tradition of classical "twin comedies" Tim Blake Nelson's Leaves of Grass, a comic thriller set against Ivy League politics, backwoods drug deals, classic philosophy and the Jewish community of Tulsa Oklahoma, attempts to answer one of the oldest questions in the world - what does it truly mean to be happy?
