All About Eye Exams

How often?

Early detection is vital to treating some of the common eye conditions, BIG W Vision recommends an eye exam every 2 years, even if you don’t wear glasses and even if your vision is still good.

What’s involved?

A complete eye exam involves a series of tests designed to evaluate your vision and check for eye diseases. It doesn’t hurt. The eye exam usually begins with your medical history and any vision problems you might be experiencing. Next, your Optometrist checks both the inside and outside of your eyes. Finally, your Optometrist measures your vision and assesses your need for glasses or contact lenses.

What eye disorders are screened for in an eye exam?

There are too many to mention, however some more commonly known ones include Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Dry Eye, Allergies, Diabetic Maculopathy, Turned Eye and Astigmatism to name a few.

What about Children?

Early identification of a child’s vision problem can be crucial because children often are more responsive to treatment when they are diagnosed early. All children should be examined before they are three years old and again before starting school.

What does it cost?

Eye exams are bulk billed to Medicare, so for eligible Medicare card holders Medicare Australia covers the full cost of the exam meaning there is no out of pocket expense for you.
